Understanding Autism and Neuro-diversity is a passion of mine, I feel there is such an importance for being autism aware within the counselling space. I have learnt through personal experience and volunteering with Dimensions for Autism; a Devon based support group for neuro-diverse adults, that the counselling process can sometimes take longer, there can be difficulty focusing or concentrating, delayed emotional reactions, difficulty expressing emotion, to name a few examples.
My placement hours throughout my degree, allowed me to gain plenty of experience working with adults either diagnosed, or suspecting they are on the spectrum. But, without learning disabilities. This has ensured an in-depth knowledge and awareness around autism and it also means that my counselling approach has naturally evolved with an understanding of neuro-diversity from the start. I have since then, worked with many neuro-diverse clients therapeutically.
I understand how you may need to do things differently within our sessions together. So, make yourself comfortable, even if that means sitting or laying on the floor here. Core Counselling has a box of fidget toys, a fluffy rug, a weighted blanket, dim lights and lots of cushions, with the hope of making your counselling process more comfortable.
If you find yourself wondering whether you may be on the spectrum; Core counselling can be a safe and confidential space where you can begin to understand what may be going on for you. If you wish, I can walk alongside you on your journey to becoming diagnosed and beyond.. every step of the way.
