Understanding Autism and neuro diversity is a true passion of mine, and I believe it’s incredibly important to be Autism aware in the counselling space. Through my personal experience and volunteering with Dimensions for Autism, a Devon based support group for neuro diverse adults, I have learned that the counselling process can look different for neuro diverse individuals. Challenges like difficulty focusing, delayed emotional reactions, or sensory sensitivities can arise, and the pace of therapy may naturally be slower.
During my degree, I gained valuable experience working with adults who are diagnosed with Autism or suspect they may be on the Autism spectrum, without learning disabilities. This has given me a profound understanding of Autism and neuro diversity, which has shaped my approach to counselling from the very beginning. Since then, I’ve had the privilege of working with many neuro diverse clients, supporting them on their therapeutic journey with the understanding and adjustments needed.
I know that everyone’s needs are unique, and I’m happy to adjust to help you feel as comfortable as possible during our sessions. Whether you prefer sitting on the floor, using a fidget toy, or wrapping yourself in a weighted blanket, Core Counselling has a range of resources to help create a safe, welcoming environment. There’s a fluffy rug, dim lighting, and plenty of cushions to make you feel at ease.
If you're wondering whether you might be on the Autism spectrum, Core Counselling can offer a confidential, safe space to explore your thoughts and feelings. If you choose to pursue a diagnosis, I can walk alongside you through that journey and beyond, offering support every step of the way.
